The Munster Association of Referees is giving you the opportunity to give back to the sport! Rugby referees enjoy the same benefits of the game as the players- without the injuries! If keeping fit, (referees run six miles in an 80 minute match), travelling, taking part in a lively social scene or getting an adrenaline rush is your idea of a great pastime, rugby refereeing could be for you. As well as the obvious benefits, a referee's constant study of the game enriches their enjoyment of this lifetime sport. There is more of a need for referees now than ever!
Munster has a tradition of producing some of the top referees in the sport. Dave McHugh, Referee Recruitment Officer with the IRFU is a former MAR referee. His refereeing career highlights include refereeing at three World Cups, 29 Internationals and two European Cup finals. During his days as a referee, the sport has taken him on duty all over the world, including Argentina, Japan, Dubai, Australia, New Zealand, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Canada and the USA. He was also a Specialist Advisor on the Lions Tour in 2005.
Of the current crop of MAR referees, Bruff's George Clancy has recently been promoted to the IRB Refereeing panel. He recently
took charge of his first senior international South Africa V Italy. He has refereed 12 Heineken Cup games, and two
European Challenge Cup Quarter-finals. He has also refereed at the U-19 RWC (2005), the
U-21 RWC (2006) and the final of the Churchill Cup (2007). He is also on the IRB's
Touchjudge/TMO panel..
Peter Fitzgibbon of Thomond RFC started reffing in 2000. He is now a regular at Magners League and European level and
made his Heineken cup debut this season, going on the referee in four out of six rounds at
the pool stages. Peter also refereed the 2008 IRB Under 20 World Cup Final New Zealand v England.
Garryowen's Leo Colgan has refereed at AIB League first division
level, and joined the ERC touch judging panel. Clancy, Fitzgibbon and Colgan all began
their refereeing careers together seven years ago.
Sundays Well Olan Trevor has recently announced his retirement, however in his career Olan Refereed World Cup qualifing games, The Churchill Cup, Heineken Cup and Magners league and AIB League.
